Category 3 (Cat3) unshielded twisted pair is the traditional wiring standard for analog telephone lines and early Ethernet networks. While new data installations use Cat5e or Cat6, Cat3 remains the correct and appropriate choice for analog voice line extensions, legacy key system wiring, and certain intercom and alarm circuit applications — particularly in older Chicago residential and commercial buildings where this infrastructure still runs throughout the walls.
